Our Goal
Our goal is to raise $40,000 to sponsor a refugee family to live in the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood for a year.
Why $40,000? The Government of Canada requires that sponsors demonstrate capacity to provide a minimum of $25,000 for a family of 2. GWRI's goal is to raise more than the minimum because the cost of rent and living is high in Vancouver.
As of April 16/19, we've raised $52,888! Track our fundraising total at our Chimp site.

Established in June 2017
Our group first came together in June 2017. The Grandview-Woodland Refugee Initiative has been formed to respond the current refugee crisis, at a community level, by sponsoring and supporting a refugee family in their resettlement in East Vancouver.
Partnership Support
We've partnered with the Grandview Calvary Baptist Church (GCBC). They are a registered charitable organization which acts as our Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH). An SAH is an organzation that has signed an agreement with the Government of Canada to help support refugees to resettle in Canada.
Why the Grandview Calvary Baptist Church?
Why the Grandview Calvary Baptist Church?
- Partnering with an SAH expedites the sponsorship process.
- GCBC is a registered charity with a long history of supporting new immigrants & refugees.
- It allows us to provide charitable tax donation receipts to donors & we benefit from GCBC's administrative capacity.
- Neither the GCBC nor the GWRI take any of the funds raised to cover administration costs ... all money goes to the refugees.
- Participation in our partnership is not faith related.
